My life

Hello everyone.  It’s been a while since I blogged, so I thought I would share the continuing saga that is my life 🙂

Last Thursday I had steroid injections in my back.  It involved putting a giant needle in my back.

'No no!! Not that one... The BIG one on the top shelf!!'

When the nurse was prepping me, she had me lay on the table on my stomach and pulled my pants down, exposing my butt as she prepped my lower back.  The doctor walked in and said “Are you ready for this?”  and I said “I have assumed the position.”  He thought it was funny.  As they injected the steroids, there was a lot of pain and then afterward, I felt stiff and numb.  I think it has helped though.  I no longer feel the bad pain in my lower back, but now I feel the pain that is in the rest of my back!

Friday, my mom and I went to the grand opening of the Tanger Outlet Mall in Sunbury, Ohio and I got to meet the Property Brothers! (from HGTV)

I don’t think I could’ve walked all around the mall without the back injection that I had.  That day, according to my fitbit, I walked around 2.4 miles!

One thing that is really important is the choices made when eating out.   At the mall, my mom wanted Starbucks, so I asked for water.   She ended up bringing me a strawberries and cream frappacino (no coffee in it).  They made it with skim milk and the whole thing was about 350 calories.

Let me tell you.. it was soo good.  I haven’t had ice cream or any cold treats in so long and after being in the hot sun all day, this was really good!  Later that day, I had a Panera chicken and strawberry poppyseed salad for dinner.   Then a few days later, my friend wanted to go to O’charley’s.  There is nothing on the menu (unless you like fish which I do not) that is low in calories.  Even the salads have crazy amounts of calories, etc.  Finally i found that any hamburger can be switched out for a grilled chicken breast.   So I got a cajun hamburger but subbed the chicken breast and ate it without the cheese and bread with a side salad.   I was proud of myself for finding something that I can eat.

This morning I weighed myself and I have lost 42.9 lbs since May 1.  Let’s hope that momentum keeps going!!

Bye for now!

My ongoing life

So I realized I haven’t done a blog in a while.  I wanted to celebrate the fact that I have now lost a total of 35 lbs since May 1.

I got the results back from my MRI on Monday.  They told me that I have arthritis (duh) and the beginning of degenerative spine disease.  They want me to get an epidural steroid injection to see if that helps with the pain.  They do it over 2 different times.  So I will be getting this done June 23 and July 13.  I am a little scared because they insert a giant needle in my back.  I hate needles! I just hope it makes me able to walk and stand without pain!

Last Monday, I did water aerobics.  I got there early, so I decided to swim before the class.  there was no one else in the pool so I was swimming back and forth, dog paddling and breast stroking the whole way.  I swam for about 30 minutes before class.. Then once the class started, I realized that was a mistake. All the muscles I had overworked by swimming were the same muscles I was working in the class. I was so sore afterwards! It was fun though and I am going to do the aerobics again this coming Monday.

One thing that has been hard is finding things to eat when I do not have time to cook.  This week, I think I ate out too much. Last Saturday at my parent’s house, we had Domino’s pizza for dinner.  It was a medium pizza and I only had 3 pieces plus a salad.  Sunday, I went out to eat with a friend to Mongolian BBQ.  Normally I would’ve gotten mostly pasta with some chicken on top and I would’ve gone back up for a 2nd bowl.  This time, I had carrots with french dressing and then I just got a bowl of chicken. I put a couple of noodles on it but not many at all.  That is all I had.  Monday, after aerobics, I was heading to a friend’s house, so I stopped at Wendy’s and got a side salad and a spicy chicken sandwich (no bun). Tuesday I was going to the movie theater, so my friend and I wen to Champps.  It was hard to find something to eat on their menu. I finally settled on 3 grilled tacos in soft corn tortillas.  I asked for no cheese and sour cream and instead of chips and salsa, i got a side salad.  Thursday I had to run around after work so I got Wendy’s again (same as before)  Tonight(Friday) is going to be the first night where I can actually cook a homemade meal.   I think  I am still making decent choices even though I have been eating out too much. I just hope it doesn’t affect the scale!

Life after the Advocare Challenge

Well, I discovered something about myself this weekend.   I cannot stand being at a country bar!  My cousin is moving to Florida in a few weeks so he had a going away party that started at Quaker Steak and Lube.

I had never been there before and let me just say the food was really really good!  I had  the small portion of their Grilled boneless wings with Buckeye BBQ sauce and a side salad with Italian dressing.  The menu was full of things that the old me would’ve eaten in a heart beat (such as Buffalo Chicken Mac and Cheese.)  The people I was with got Nachos and loaded french fries as appetizers.  I had 3 nacho chips with chicken and jalapenos on them(I stayed away from the cheese)  and I had one plain french fry (I don’t like all the loaded stuff anyway.)  So I didn’t feel left out or limited in what I was eating.  Afterward we all went to a country bar called Tequila Cowboy.

When I first walked in, I thought it was O.K.  It wasn’t too crowded and the noise of people talking covered up the music playing in the background.  There was a mechanical bull in the corner and it was fun to watch people ride that.  I tried to sit on one of their stools and was unable to.  Because I have knee and leg problems, I do not have the ability to hop up on a stool anymore.   My cousin found a short chair for me.  It was very embarrassing sitting in a short chair between all the high stools.  Then a live band began playing.  That is when I realized that my hatred for country music was going to outweigh any love I have for my family and hanging out with my cousins.   I tried to entertain myself by watching the middle aged women dance horribly to the music but then people stood directly in front of me and I couldn’t see anything.  I then tried to entertain myself on my phone but even that became boring.  I think I lasted about 2 1/2 hours and then my cousin Brian said he was going upstairs to some pool tables.  I turned to my other cousin Megan and asked “Do we need to still be here?”  She agreed so after checking out the karaoke bar WannaB’s which is attached, we left.  She promised to come  pick up my cousin Brian when the bar closed.  I had never been happier to get into my car and turn on Sirus Satellite radio on the Hair Nation channel.  I sang the loudest I could to “Love Song” by Tesla and I had my cousin Megan laughing at me the entire time.  At least, now I know that any time someone invites me a country bar again, I can say “No!”

So the next day I weighed myself in the morning and found that I have now lost 29 lbs since May 1!!

So I am happy to say I am still on track and will keep on keepin’ on 🙂

Life after the Advocare Challenge

Hello everyone! It’s been a few days since I ended the challenge and a lot has happened.  I think I have made healthy choices through it all.

The first thing I want to mention is that I had ordered 2 different kinds of the meal replacement shakes to get me through the next month.  I ordered chocolate peanut butter and vanilla.  I have not had the vanilla yet but I wanted to describe the chocolate peanut butter.   It smells like a Reese’s cup when you open the packet!  I mixed it with some unsweetened almond milk and took my first drink.  At first the taste of peanut butter was overpowering.  But as I drank it more and more, it was really good.  I am a HUGE fan of chocolate peanut butter things and I think you would have to be to enjoy this.  I cannot wait to drink it at home when I can make it into an actual shake with some ice and my handy Bullet (blender)!

Now to get on with my life after the challenge.  Last Wednesday I wanted to go do a second day of water aerobics, so I went to the Groveport Rec Center and and was getting ready to pay for the class when I clarified “You do have the 6pm Water Aerobics class, right?”  The girl said no.  The class that night was the Water Zumba at 6:15pm.  Now when I hear Zumba, I think advanced movement and dance so I was too scared to try it by myself.   I asked I could stay to watch and ended up waiting quite a while.  The class did not start until 6:30pm because most of the class members where talking in the lobby for a while.  In fact,  just over hearing them, it felt very clique-y.  They were watching people walking in and debating over whether they looked liked “Zumba people.”  These were women mostly in their 50’s and 60’s doing the debating.  So finally I watched the beginning of the class and I almost wished I had done it.  It is not really water Zumba.  It is more like water “slow dance movements  underwater.”  I think I could’ve kept up easily and it probably would’ve been right up my alley.  I am going to try it soon.

Thursday I made tacos.   I bought 98% lean hamburger (because I cannot stand turkey burgers) and I bought an Old El Paso taco kit.  I made the tacos per the directions and just added some salsa into the meat.  I ate 2 tacos with jalapenos on it and a cup of frozen steamed corn.  The dinner was really good.  The sad part was that I fell asleep on my couch at 10pm and woke up at 6:30am and realized that I had not put away the taco meat. Since it sat out for so long, I had to throw the rest away!

Friday, my mom and I went to Tumbleweed for dinner.  They brought the chips and salsa which were always my downfall before.  I didn’t deprive myself, but decided to eat 6 chips with some salsa. For dinner, I had their grilled chicken with barbecue sauce on the sauce, corn on the cob and a salad.  I did not eat the bacon, tomatoes or croutons on the salad.  I had fat free french dressing.  To drink, I ordered water.   By habit, I almost ordered a coke but I caught myself.  It was really good to be able to eat out and have it not be too bad for me.

Sunday, I went to a cookout at a friend’s house.  This was the most temptation that I have had to experience yet.  I brought a chicken breast for my friend to grill for me and I brought my own salad and dressing.   I also had some watermelon.  There was a bag of lays sour cream and onion chips on the table in front of me.  I decided not to limit myself and had 1 serving of those (about 17 chips).  Then later, we were playing a card game and there was a bag of Smart Food Spicy Jalapeno Ranch popcorn.  I ate a serving of that as well.

Even with eating those extra things that I have not had in a while, for the whole day I was still under 1000 calories.  When I got hungry later at home, I just drank two cans of sparkling water.  The important thing to remember for that day is that even though there were cookies, macaroni and cheese, buttery corn on the cob and fried chicken, I did not touch any of those things.

Monday I had a cookout of my own that turned into a cook-in because I could not get my grill to work!  But I ended up making a chicken breast with barbecue sauce to dip and corn on the cob with I can’t believe it’s not butter Spray butter.

So even though I have eaten a lot of corn in the last week, I still think I have made healthy decisions and I will weigh myself in another few days and see where I am at.  Wish me luck!

Day 24 of the Advocare 24 day challenge!

It is day 24… the last day of my challenge!  wooo hooo!!!  I will weigh and measure myself tonight and report back tomorrow.  Today I met with my “coach”  about what to do after the challenge.  He pretty much said what I was already planning on doing.  Just keep eating like I am eating.  Get some cardio in each night and he wants me to continue with the shakes and spark.  I am going to check on the price but I don’d mind the shakes.  It is a lot easier than figuring out what to eat for breakfast every day!

One thing that was nice was when I walked in, he told me I looked a lot smaller.  That is always nice to hear!

I forgot to mention my dinner from Monday.  I was headed to my friend’s house, so I stopped at Panera bread and got their strawberry poppyseed salad.  It had chicken, strawberries, pineapple, blueberries and walnuts in it.  With the strawberries removed and a poppyseed dressing on top, it was really good!!

panera bread salad

Last night I had shredded chicken, salsa and jalapenos in a 9 grain wrap with chia.. and a pickle.  I also tried almond butter for the first time.  The kind I had was a in a packet and was called Justin’s Vanilla Almond Butter.

I only squeezed out half, if that, and ate it on an apple.  From what I could tell it wasn’t much different than peanut butter.  I am going to try it again tonight but if its not life changing, I probably won’t buy it again  because it is really expensive.  It was $1.50 for the tiny packet I had.

For the recipe today, I thought this looked good. I would use a low carb multigrain wrap though:

This is the end… my only friend…the end

Day 23 of the Advocare 24 day Challenge

Day 23! I am almost at the end!  Tomorrow is the last day of my challenge!  I haven’t posted on here since last Thursday because this weekend was my music festival Rock on the Range!

It was a lot of fun, and a lot of being wet and cold from the rain.  One thing I did was make sure to make good choices when it came to eating.  I had made chicken salad with chicken and light miracle whip and I ate that on a 9 grain wrap with Chia on Friday morning and Saturday morning for breakfast. For lunch, I snuck in a granola bar and then I waited until I got home each night around 11pm and had pulled chicken and a salad for dinner.  The only thing I messed up was mount of water I have to drink.  I didn’t drink as much water because I did not want to keep running to the bathroom during the concert.   Plus water was $5 a bottle.  Sunday was my relaxation day.  Normally I would go to the concert that day too but my friend and I didn’t like any of the bands playing that day so we sold our tickets for that day.  I just relaxed all day.

Monday I was also off work and I decided to try water aerobics with some friends.  This was fun but not what I expected.  I have never taken an aerobics class but when I was younger, I did take Jazzercise.  I was expected a little less dancing than Jazzercise, but something like that in water.  Instead, when we first got there, they had us walking round and round this small area of the pool designated as a lazy river.  We would walk one way several times and then switch and walk against the pool of the water.  Then we out in the regular area of the pool and were given a foam barbell.

My friends and I joked that the barbells looked like a smaller version of what the American Gladiators used to knock each other off pedestals

During the aerobics, the instructor had us using the barbell for strength exercises in our arms, backs and sides.  Then we got a pool noodle and did some more exercises using that.  It was a full workout and today I am feeling the muscles I used! It was fun though and I think I am going to go back tomorrow and do it again.

Speaking of tomorrow, since it is  my last day of the challenge, I will be meeting with my coach to find out what the next step in my process will be.  I am scared and excited to see what he has to say.

Today’s recipe:

The finish line is in sight!

Day 18 of the Advocare 24 day challenge

It is day 18 of my challenge.  Tomorrow starts my weekend!  Woo hoo!  I am off work tomorrow through Monday. The reason why is for Rock on the Range. Rock-on-the-Range-X-2016

Rock on the Range is a 3 day concert event in Columbus Ohio at Crew Stadium.  There are 3 stages and just tons and tons of bands playing.  With my mobility issues, I usually just stay at the main stage in my seat.  But even then I am seeing over 20 bands all weekend.  I have gone every year.  It is so much fun!  When I started the challenge, I let my coach know that I was doing this and it will affect how I eat those days.  This year I am not going on Sunday, so it will only affect 2 days of my challenge. What I would do in previous years is wake up early and leave around 9:30am. I would take 2 deli turkey sandwiches on Brownberry sandwich thins (instead of bread) (sandwiches made with turkey, jalapenos,  and light miracle whip) and usually a coke and some cookies.  Then I would try to not eat anything all day but water (sometimes I would have a soft pretzel) then around  6 or 7pm I would have a granola bar and then on the way home at midnight I would stop at Mcdonald’s or someplace like that.  My coach told me he doesn’t care about the sandwiches (although this year I am using carb smart wraps and chicken hunks) or the granola bars.  He just doesn’t want me having the coke, cookies and Mcdonald’s.  So I will make my dinner for the next 2 days tonight and just heat it up when I get home from the concerts each night.  I am not sure how I am going to work in all the pills, but I will try my best.

So last night I did something sort of bad.  When I was getting ready to make dinner, I did not want to heat up my chicken.  I was craving noodles so bad.  So i opened my freezer and at the bottom was a bag of Garlic Chicken Voila.  If you have never seen this, it is basically noodles with hunks of chicken and vegetables.

I told myself I was just going to look at it.  So I pulled it out and read the nutrition on it.  I couldn’t believe it.  It was only 240 calories for 1 cup(cooked) and  had 6 grams of sugar.  So I thought to myself, you know what, this will really satisfy my craving for the noodles, so I cooked it.  I picked out all the carrots because I cannot stand cooked carrots and neither can my dogs.  I forced myself to eat the broccoli (which I also hate) as a punishment for the noodles.  I measured out 1 1/2 cups and had a salad with it.  Can I just say it was wonderful! Afterwards, I did feel guilty but my craving has been sated. There is another another cup and half left.  I am not sure when I will eat that.

Tonight for dinner, I am making chicken salad with light miracle whip instead of mayonnaise.  I have onions and walnuts to put in it as well.  I had to buy a nine grain wrap with chia because they were out of the multi grain wraps.  I hope it tastes as good.

Today’s recipe:  (I am not sure about this because I don’t know how Shirataki noodles taste, but they have 0 calories and fat and look good!)

Keep it up!
